The Fafrees F20 Mate is a foldable electric tricycle designed with comfort, stability, and accessibility in mind. With three wheels, a wide cushioned seat, a supportive backrest, two baskets, and lockable brakes, it offers a practical riding option for older adults and people who find a conventional bicycle difficult to use.

Assembly and First Impressions

The Fafrees F20 Mate arrives in a large, square box and requires some assembly before riding. The main tasks include installing the front wheel, display, front basket, headlight, pedals, and mirrors.

Although it is not ready to ride straight out of the box, the assembly process is straightforward. Tools are included, and the installation steps are simple enough for most people to manage.

Riding Comfort and Stability

One of the biggest advantages of the Fafrees F20 Mate becomes clear as soon as you sit on it. Thanks to its three-wheel design, you can stop without needing to put your feet on the ground to keep your balance. This makes stopping and starting feel more relaxed, especially for riders who may struggle with balancing on a conventional two-wheeled bicycle.

The seat is another highlight. It is wide, soft, and supportive, while the large backrest gives the riding position a feel that is closer to sitting in a comfortable chair than on a typical e-bike.

When riding in a straight line, the F20 Mate feels steady. However, its stability has limits when cornering. Taking a turn too quickly can cause one of the rear wheels to lift, so it is important to reduce speed before turning. Riders should take extra care when navigating corners, particularly if they are new to electric tricycles.

Electric Assistance and Throttle Performance

The electric assistance works well at lower speeds. During my test, light pedalling was enough to reach around 20 km/h without much effort.

However, accelerating from 20 km/h to the maximum assisted speed of 25 km/h required considerably harder pedalling. This difference was noticeable and made reaching the top speed less effortless than expected.

For a tricycle aimed partly at older riders and people with limited physical mobility, this is an important drawback. Riders who have difficulty pedalling may find the additional effort required at higher speeds frustrating.

The Fafrees F20 Mate also has a throttle, but it only operates up to 6 km/h. It responds quickly and works smoothly in use, providing a convenient way to move the tricycle at walking pace.

Lockable Brakes for Easier Mounting and Dismounting

A particularly useful feature is the inclusion of lockable brakes. Because a three-wheeled bike can still roll when parked, being able to lock the brakes helps keep the F20 Mate in place.

The locking levers are small, neatly designed, and easy to operate. This feature is especially practical for riders who need extra support when getting on or off the tricycle, as it helps prevent unwanted movement while they are settling into the seat.

Mirrors: A Useful Idea with Room for Improvement

The inclusion of mirrors makes sense on a comfort-focused electric tricycle, where riders may appreciate being able to check behind them without turning around as much.

Unfortunately, the mirror placement could be better. They sit on the inner sides of the handlebars, close together, and do not extend far enough outward. During my test, the view was largely blocked by my own shoulders, meaning I had to move my body to see behind me.

The mirrors are a good idea, but their positioning limits their usefulness. A wider placement would make them more practical for everyday riding.

Two Baskets and a Practical Design

The Fafrees F20 Mate is designed around everyday convenience. Its two baskets provide useful space for carrying belongings, making it suitable for activities such as shopping or short local trips.

The bike also has two separate chains: one connects the pedals to the motor, while the other transfers power from the motor to the rear axle that drives the two back wheels.

In terms of appearance, the dark green finish gives the tricycle a distinctive look. The paintwork looks well executed, and the gold-colored Fafrees logo catches the light nicely. The headlight, mounted on the front basket, adds character to the front end.

Overall, the design balances practical features with a style that feels more considered than purely utilitarian.

Display, Lights, and Electronics

The display has an unusual appearance at first glance, as it can look as though it has been installed upside down. In practice, this does not affect its main function. It provides the information needed for an electric bike, and I found it worked adequately during the test.

The lighting is another positive point. The front headlight provides a good range of illumination, while the rear lights work well and also function as turn indicators. These features help make the F20 Mate more practical for everyday use.

How Practical Is the Folding Design?

Despite being a folding electric tricycle, the Fafrees F20 Mate remains relatively large when folded. The folding feature does not make the bike particularly lightweight, and the two rear wheels mean it still takes up a considerable amount of space.

The ability to fold it is useful to have, but it does not transform the tricycle into a particularly compact package. If storage space or easy transport in a car is your main priority, its size when folded is worth considering.

Final Verdict: Who Should Consider the Fafrees F20 Mate?

The Fafrees F20 Mate is a specialised folding electric tricycle that focuses on comfort, stability, and accessible everyday mobility. Its three-wheel layout allows riders to stop without putting their feet down for balance, while the wide seat, large backrest, two baskets, and lockable brakes all contribute to a relaxed and practical riding experience.

It is particularly worth considering for older adults or people who find a conventional bicycle challenging to balance. However, it is not without compromises. The extra effort needed to accelerate from 20 to 25 km/h, the limited visibility from the mirrors, the risk of lifting a rear wheel when cornering too quickly, and the substantial folded size are all worth keeping in mind.

Overall, the Fafrees F20 Mate offers a comfortable and accessible alternative to a traditional e-bike. Its strongest points are the supportive seating, stable straight-line riding, and practical features, making it an interesting option for riders who value ease of use over compactness or sporty handling.
