🚲 Mooncool TK-1 E-Trike Review: Comfort, Cargo & Surprising Fun

Looking for a comfortable, stable e-bike with cargo space and three wheels? Meet the Mooncool TK-1 E-Trike — a unique electric tricycle built for accessibility, practicality, and relaxed cruising. But does it deliver on its promises?

Here's my hands-on review after unboxing, assembling, and riding it.

📦 Assembly: “95% Assembled”? Not Quite.

Mooncool claims the TK-1 arrives 95% assembled, but in reality, it felt more like 80%. The rear fenders in particular were a pain to install — bolts are hard to reach and require a long drill extension. It’s not a dealbreaker, but for a bike this big, they could definitely pre-assemble more at the factory.

Tip: Grab a second person to help with assembly — it’ll save you time and frustration.

🔧 Build Quality & Design

Once assembled, the overall frame feels solid. No rattles, flex, or loose joints. However, one disappointment: the battery case.

On a $2,500+ trike, the basic screw-on battery just doesn’t feel premium. It works, but doesn’t look the part.

That said, there are thoughtful design choices too:

  • Massive saddle: It’s comically large—but incredibly comfortable.

  • Upright riding position: Feels natural and easy on the back.

  • Spacious rear basket: Holds groceries, gear—or even a person (seriously).

  • Front basket with rack: Adds even more utility.

🎨 Looks & Color Options

We tested the subtle grey version, which looks sleek and modern. But Mooncool also offers more colorful choices if you prefer something bolder.

⚡ Throttle & Performance

One standout feature is the smooth throttle — it takes you up to 25 km/h (15.5 mph) effortlessly. Especially great for people with limited mobility or anyone who just wants a chill ride.

💡 Note: The throttle makes it illegal for public road use in much of Europe. Keep that in mind before purchasing.

💡 Features That Make Sense

Some clever little features I liked:

  • Bottle holder – Random, but useful.

  • Headlight on front rack – Higher placement = fewer bumps = longer lifespan.

  • Front suspension – Nothing fancy, but it softens the ride.

  • It folds! – Yes, the whole trike folds, making it easier to transport in vans or SUVs. Don’t expect it to fit in a hatchback though.

🔩 The Motor & Drive System

Here’s where things get interesting:The 500W motor is mounted mid-frame, with a double-chain system connecting it to the axle and crank.

  • The small chainring gives it a unique pedaling feel.

  • No gears means after about 20 km/h, you’ll be spinning pretty fast.

  • It’s clearly tuned for low-speed, high-torque riding — ideal for urban cruising or hauling cargo, not for high-speed pedaling.

🚴 Riding Experience

Smooth, stable, and fun. Riding the Mooncool TK-1 feels more like cruising in a lounge chair than riding a bike. But there’s one big caveat:

Cornering at speed is sketchy.Above 15 km/h, turning sharply can lift a rear wheel. The turning radius is huge, and pushing it hard can make it feel unstable.

So yeah — take corners slow and wide.

🧺 Real Cargo Power

The rear basket is massive. I sat in it just for fun — it held me no problem. While it’s not designed to carry people, it’s good to know it can handle heavy loads like groceries, pets, or equipment.

🧠 Final Verdict: Is the Mooncool TK-1 Worth It?

Pros

Cons

Super comfortable saddle

Tricky assembly

Great cargo capacity

Cheap-feeling battery case

Smooth throttle

No gears & awkward high-speed pedaling

Stable at low speeds

Poor cornering at speed

Foldable frame

Illegal throttle in parts of Europe

✔ Best For:

  • Seniors or riders with limited mobility

  • Urban errands and cargo hauling

  • People who want a relaxed, low-speed ride

  • Riders who prioritize comfort over agility

✖ Not Ideal For:

  • Aggressive riders

  • Tight urban maneuvering

  • Small vehicle transport

  • European street legality (throttle use)

💬 Final Thoughts

At just under $3,000, the Mooncool TK-1 isn’t cheap — and I’d love to see a more integrated battery design and less assembly required. But in terms of comfort, practicality, and chill ride vibes, it definitely delivers.

Thanks to Mooncool for letting me try it out.👉 If you want to check out the TK-1 E-Trike yourself, there’s a link in the description below.
