A Heavyweight Fat-Tire E-Bike with Big Potential

The Engwe L20 is a fat-tire e-bike that aims to combine power, practicality, and affordability. With its foldable design, sturdy build, and free front rack, it stands out in the crowded budget e-bike market. But does it deliver on performance and convenience, or is it weighed down—literally—by some design flaws? Let’s dive into this in-depth review.

Unboxing & Assembly – Not as Simple as It Looks

Right out of the box, the Engwe L20 makes an impression. It looks solid, the paint options are refreshing (finally, some color choices beyond black!), and you even get a free front rack—a nice bonus when most brands charge extra.

But Here’s the Catch…

Assembling the L20 is more frustrating than it should be.

  • The front wheel spacers? The manual doesn’t explain them well, making installation trickier than necessary.

  • The handlebar setup? If you don’t install it in the correct order, the cable routing through the front rack won’t work.

It’s not a dealbreaker, but be prepared to double-check everything during assembly.

Design & Build Quality – A Fat-Tire E-Bike with a Unique Look

Once assembled, the Engwe L20 definitely has presence. The 20x4.0” fat tires give it a strong, utility-bike feel, and the cruiser-style handlebars provide a relaxed riding position.

However, there’s one thing you’ll immediately noticethis bike is heavy. At 34kg (74.8 lbs), it’s on the heavier side for a foldable e-bike. If you need something easy to carry up stairs or load into a car, this might not be the best choice.

But on the plus side, the extra weight adds stability at higher speeds, making it feel planted and secure on the road.

Specs & Performance – What’s Under the Hood?

Here’s what the Engwe L20 is packing:

  • Motor: 250W brushless motor (50Nm torque)

  • Battery: 48V 13Ah Lithium-Ion

  • Range: Claimed 140km (87 miles) – realistic range closer to 100km (62 miles)

  • Tires: 20x4.0” fat tires

  • Gears: Shimano 7-speed

  • Brakes: Mechanical 160mm disc brakes

  • Weight: 34kg (74.8 lbs)

One interesting thing—the battery looks identical to the one on the Hitway BK6S. Same manufacturer? Maybe. Either way, extra batteries are only €380, which is shockingly affordable compared to competitors.

Riding Experience – Smooth but Heavy

Once you hit the road, the Engwe L20 delivers a comfortable and stable ride.

  • Fat tires soak up bumps well, making it great for city streets and light off-road use.

  • Upright seating position feels relaxed and natural.

  • 50Nm of torque is decent, but don’t expect it to fly up hills10° inclines are manageable but not effortless.

One thing that surprised me—the "B" button on the handlebar is actually a boost mode.

  • Press and hold it, and you get extra power instantly.

  • The downside? You have to keep holding it—a more permanent option would’ve been better.

The mechanical disc brakes do the job, but hydraulic brakes would have been a much-welcome upgrade at this price.

What Could Be Better?

No e-bike is perfect, and the Engwe L20 has a few drawbacks:✔ Assembly is tricky – The front wheel spacers and handlebar setup could be clearer.✔ Heavy for a foldable e-bike – Carrying 34kg is no joke.✔ Mechanical brakes – They work fine, but hydraulic would be a major upgrade.✔ Boost mode isn’t permanent – Having to hold the button down is annoying.

Final Verdict – Who Should Buy the Engwe L20?

If you’re looking for a sturdy, stylish, fat-tire e-bike that’s built for both city streets and light trails, the Engwe L20 is a solid choice. The comfortable ride, free front rack, and affordable extra battery option make it a practical pick for commuters, delivery riders, or anyone who wants an e-bike that can handle a variety of conditions.

However, if you need something lightweight and easy to carry, this might not be the best option. The weight is noticeable, and assembly could be smoother.

Overall Rating: 8/10

✔ Great ride quality & comfort✔ Fat tires for all-terrain stability✔ Affordable extra battery option✘ Heavy & not the most portable✘ Assembly could be better
